A comic opera set in a small Suffolk market town following the planning and presentation of a May Day parade. It is based on based on the short story Le Rosier de Madame Husson by the French author Guy de Maupassant. Benjamin Britten’s only true comic opera, Albert Herring explores the themes of losing innocence, social stratification, Victorian morality, and coming of age, all cast in the setting of the composer’s brilliantly witty chamber score.
